It was our third day (29 December 2019) in Tasmania and we decided to travel from Port Arthur to Hobart and make it a day of fun things to do in Hobart.
There are lots to do both in and around the waterfront. Our first stop was Federation Artisan Chocolates, followed by MONA museum and then experience the most celebrated food and wine festival ‘The Taste of Tasmania’ (the largest festival of its kind in Australia) which is located nearby Constitution Dock Marina.
It is a free event, a range of food stalls available, selling Tasmanian produce and it is held during the ‘Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race’ with plenty of entertainment to celebrate their arrival in Hobart (28 December 2019 to Friday 3 January 2020) – well catered event.
If the food stalls are not your taste, there are many high-end restaurants you could dine at, but their price ranges are pricey. My intentions was to see the yachts and have their famous scallop curry pie – which is exactly what I did.
What I was surprised was the food van where I purchased my pie do not exchange cash – card only. Their 'Scallop Curry Pie' was creamy and tasty, a must buy – it’s a Tassie thing to do and experience.
Seeing the yachts, words cannot describe, I was very excited to take part of this amazing event.
Constitution Dock Marina is a great draw for tourists, on its own, as boat tours embark from the docks area (Brooke Street Pier) to view Hobart via cruise or a convenient way to travel to MONA museum or if you’re adventurous enough, book a Bruny Island Cruise adventure (which we did and took part on 6 January 2020). Hobart is also famously known for their markets, where they get to showcase their wonderful produce.
We didn’t take part in any of their markets, as we were heading to our next stop the following day – Launceston. However, if you are staying in the heart of Hobart, you have opportunities to visit the markets: Salamanca Markets (Saturday 8.30am to 3pm, Bathurst Street); Farm Gate Market (Sunday 8.30am to 1pm, Bathurst Street); Hobart Twilight Markets (various times / dates - check their Facebook); and Street Eats @ Franko (every Friday night – November to April, Franklin Square).
Constitution Dock Marina is surrounded by great places to eat and lots of activities to do, or simply sit back and relax and take in the atmosphere / views and enjoy your day. The only downfall I found is that it is meter-parking, it should be free parking during ‘The Taste of Tasmania’ event. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen too – it was a very hot, sunny day, where you will burn quite easily having the sun reflecting off the sea.
