Cabin Was Not What We Expected - NRMA Port Arthur Holiday Park

We chose to stay at this park because it is only a 5-minute drive away from Port Arthur Historic Site and also met our budget ‘Garden Cabin’ to cater for four adults.

When checking-in, you will receive at reception the key to the cabin, a map of the park so you can easily locate the cabin plus a four-digit code to open the boomgate and Wi-Fi password.

We did find the cabin to be ‘compact’. The main bedroom is in the same room as your dining and kitchen – no privacy. The other bedroom had bunk beds, a roll away and a sliding door to close the room.

However, I found the lay out rather peculiar. To access the bathroom from the main bedroom, you would have to open the sliding door of the other bedroom, walk through and into the bathroom. This could be rather annoying if the other two are asleep.

As for the bathroom, it was long and narrow, no room to put your toiletries, we used the windowsill to rest our toothbrushes and toothpaste. As for the shower, there was no shower shelf / racks to put your shower products – that was awkward and uncomfortable.

The shower racks don’t have to be fancy but it would have been nice to have one for convenience, I have seen at other cabins that we stayed at, a simple shower rack hanging from the shower head, at least there was a rack – room for improvement. Also when sliding the bathroom door closed it hit the leg of the bunk bed so there was a gap of about 5cm.

So overall, the layout of the cabin was not well thought of. Having said that, the cabin was neat and clean, beds come with clean linen and towels, with complimentary mini bathroom accessories (shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion). A complimentary coffee and tea starter kit is provided (including 300ml milk in the fridge). Offers one free car park space per cabin (beside the cabin). Their free Wi-Fi service connection was very slow (but we were prewarned by reception upon arrival), you only get 1GB daily allowance, which will reset at midnight.

There is a guest booklet ‘compendium’ on the dining table with your ‘do’s and don’ts’ on site to ensure you have a safe and best experience as well as what Port Arthur has on offer – you would be pleasantly surprised there are other activities to do apart from visiting the Port Arthur Historic Site. The booklet also reveals all the services and facilities available on site plus local restaurants.

However, what the site had to offer, compensated for the cabin. The surrounding environment and serenity of the place was pure pleasure. The park is close by the sea (perfect for fishing) and also has a kiosk which is located at reception (basic supplies); fully equipped camp kitchen; BBQ area; pizza oven; amazing playground area for the children; and laundry. If you do have young children, this is the perfect place to stay. They also offer ‘pedal go-karts’ for hire – a popular activity for the kids.

For the ‘health fanatics’ they have ‘self-guided tour’ walking tracks available to ‘Stewarts Bay’ (5-minute walk) or ‘Historic Site’ (50 minutes return), along your walk they have fun and interesting facts displayed for you to read about the Port Arthur Penal settlement and the region.

If you are lucky enough, you may stumble upon wildlife – there are signs displayed on trees of the wildlife living on the property that you may come across – we didn’t see any.

Staff are very friendly and are there to help you at any time, they have brochures displayed upon the wall for you to take and are happy to help you book tours or services on your behalf.
