The Port Arthur site was a penal station, using convict labour during the early 1800s. You can imagine, the stories to be told would not be of happy moments, leaving behind many disgruntled ghosts who refuses to move on. And that… I can guarantee you, that this is what the ghost tour will reveal. Our tour guide was Ross, he was amazing!
Ross randomly picked three people in the group to carry the lantern during our walks, one at the front of the group, one in the centre and the other at the back, to make walking and vision easier in the dark. He told us that he was sceptical at first but had encountered some paranormal activities while on site.
Then the terrifying stories of
ghosts commenced at each stop – our first stop was ‘The Church’, it looks quite eerie at night. What spooked me most was ‘The Separate Prison’ and ‘The Commandant’s House’ – I won’t share further details with you.
However, I can confirm many tragic, sad and misfortunate events happened on that site. Ross portrayed the stories in such a way that you can actually visualise and feel the ghosts’ pain and have a better understanding why lost souls still remain on site to this day. Did I see a ghost? No. Was I scared? Yes. Did I mention that Ross was amazing?
He even said a few relatable ‘ghost’ jokes after finishing telling us terrifying stories of convicts and / or buildings, to lessen the intense.
The tour is a 1.5-hour walking tour, so please wear comfortable, enclosed shoes, as there is a lot of walking to be done and the ground in some areas are uneven and have loose gravel.
At the end of the tour, you will return where you originally started the tour – where the gift shop is located.
Each participant will also receive a ‘Bravery’ certificate to take home – a nice finale touch and memento.
I have been on a ghost tour in Sydney at ‘The Rocks’, but I have found this ghost tour to be the best ghost tour experience I have had… so far.
I also gained a lot of history at the same time, truly recommend this tour should you be staying or visiting Port Arthur. This tour is worth every cent, a fair price @ $27 pp.
We (my wife and two daughters) were so intrigued, that we decided to book a day tour the following day, so we could have a better look at the site during the day.
