Glenrowan... the Kelly Gang's last stand against police.

On our way to Ballarat, one of my ‘point-of-interest’ was to see the “Big Ned Kelly” statue in his hometown ‘Glenrowan’, take a couple of photos and selfies and on our merry way to Ballarat.

However, Kate’s Cottage caught our attention, with a sign showing admission price to see Ned Kelly museum – adults $9 per person and children (school children up to the age of 16 years) $1 per child. The museum itself looks tiny and cozy on the outside but do not be fooled by the size of this museum, it is larger inside than it appears to be from outside.

You enter through the gift / souvenir shop only to be greeted by a friendly staff, paid our entry to the museum and was advised that we were allowed take photos – excellent!

The museum is so beautifully laid out with detailed facts and stories of the Ned Kelly years in order and clearly marked from ‘BEGINNINGS – Melbourne and Wallan 1850 – 1854’ right through to his ending titled ‘THE END OF THE KELLY REBELLION – Greta 1880 – 1881’. Very informative, interesting read. But as you walk along reading the history of Ned Kelly, you walk past original artefacts and historic memorabilia.

You also get to see a plaster cast of Ned Kelly’s head as well as a replica of his armour. But this museum does not end there, you can actually step through the back door and walk outside to see a replica of the Kelly Homestead.

This was truly an unreal and out-of-this world experience. The yard is decked out with blacksmiths displays and their everyday household items and furniture inside the homestead.

We thought it would be a quick visit, but you definitely need to have time to read Ned Kelly’s history and absorb everything on display (along with photo taking), I would say you could easily spend over an hour there.

If you are a Ned Kelly fan, there is a huge range of affordable Ned Kelly souvenirs as well as Australiana souvenirs. There is plenty of free off-street parking along Gladstone Street.
